User Study Research

Extensive observational research was conducted, in which user behavior was studied, along with examining different environments in which the table would be used, and what items live in that space. Notes were taken as to common threads of what users need and want in these spaces.

Concept Development

Modeling

Multiple iterations of small scale models were made in order to reach the desired form. Many studies were conducted on the height and width ratio of the end table. Additional studies on the curved portion of the table were done using 3D printed starch, and wood milled by the CNC.

Prototype Fabrication

The full size prototype was fabricated using profiles that were CNC milled out of birch plywood. Each profile was sanded and prepared before being assembled together to produce the extruded form. Holes in the component profile pieces were made so that when assembled, dowels could be used to align the pieces accurately, while glue was added to each surface before clamps were applied. Once assembled, veneer was applied to the flat side, where as the pulse profile side was finished through bondo, sanding, and paint.

Branding

In addition to the full scale prototype, branding collateral was also produced. A brochure and poster highlighted the elements of the Pulse design.
